Amendment in English requirements for foreign trained nurses

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in its recent bid has announced to bring some amendment in the English language requirements for applicants from overseas. The impending amendment is being seen as a move to neutralize the uncertainty which Brexit vote has brought.

Nurses and midwives coming on the register from outside the UK will still have to achieve a “level 7” in the IELTS, but how they go about it is set to change. The applicant had to achieve this score in a single sitting to match the eligibility criteria to work in UK. The new rule however relaxes this requirements and now the applicant can achieve this level into two sittings, whilst the gap between these sittings should not be more than six months.

The announcement came amid the rising concern of the officials that the Britain's departure from EU could prove detrimental to its healthcare system thereby starving the country of much needed workers. These changes will provide flexibility to the applicants while ensuring that the eligibility criteria is till met.

Uncertainties looming over UK's Healthcare system post Brexit

The air of ambivalence which is seen to be engulfing the UK post their move to extricate themselves from a 33 year old bond with the European block has been criticized by the senior executives in the healthcare system. The chief executive of the Royal college of Nursing, Peter carter, has even called the move to be a “disaster for healthcare system”.

The UK's healthcare system has always seen a n active participation from the migrant population who majorly come from Eastern Europe, Spain, Portugal and the Republic of Ireland. According to analysis from The Press Association, one in 20 NHS workers in England comes from the EU, which amounts to 57,608 NHS workers and 5% of the total workforce.

In the wake of rising dissent amongst the health and care professionals in UK, the chief nursing office, Jane Cummings has also credited the EU nationals for their contribution in the NHS workforce. She said: “There will be no immediate impact on either the registration status of EU nurses already on our register, or on the NMC in terms of our role as the UK-wide regulator for nursing and midwifery."
Appreciating their enormous contributions, Professor Cummings called them as an integral part of health and family care of UK.

NMC rolls down new flexible payment option for nurses and midwives

Further easing down the processes for the overburdened healthcare industry of Britain, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) through a new announcement introduced new rules which will now allow nurses and midwives to pay their annual registration fee in quarterly instalments. The move is said to be made in the wake of the demands raised by nurses and midwives for the need of a  more flexible payment system.

From June 2016, nurses and midwives can now choose to pay their £120 annual registration fee by quarterly direct debit payments of £30. The process will now allow them to make quarterly payments by instalment through the NMC online account, using direct debit. The option remains open for nurses and midwives who are newly signing up to make payments. However, switching to quarterly payments must be done 20 days before the first of the month in which a nurse or midwife’s annual fee is due. At the time, the move was seen as a way to help nurses cope with the NMC fee rise from £100 to £120, which took place in 2015.
The adjustment to payment options has been under consideration since a 2014 consultation.
